About the Artist

I work primarily in oils. I simply love the medium. I grew up with the smell of linseed oil and it remains one of the most comforting aromas I know.  At times, however, I have been known to abandon my first love and consort with acrylics, pastels—even watercolor pencils.  But I always return to my tender and malleable love—oil painting.

I was introduced to portraiture in my teens and I continue to enjoy that very human and very expressive genre.  I also love painting trees because of their complex beauty and their outward implications of their hidden lives.  But I often depict smaller details from nature: the patterns made by the limbs of a dwarf beach, or the reflections of a light in the afternoon on the surface of water.

Moreover, the creatures who keep us company as well as those who keep us humble and watchful, are also favorite subjects for me.

My styles are realism to somewhat impressionistic, and I am unashamedly representational.  (As the poet said, “The world is charged with the grandeur of God.”) I understand abstraction and appreciate it in the forms we received from Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc—which is to say as representations of Platonic forms.  But for my work, I prefer the incarnate.

I offer on this site original works as well as prints.  I also take commissions if you’re interesting.
