About the Artist
I work primarily in oils. I simply love the medium. I grew up with the smell of linseed oil and it remains one of the most comforting aromas I know. At times, however, I have been known to abandon my first love and consort with acrylics, pastels—even watercolor pencils. But I always return to my tender and malleable love—oil painting.
I was introduced to portraiture in my teens and I continue to enjoy that very human and very expressive genre. I also love painting trees because of their complex beauty and their outward implications of their hidden lives, but I often depict smaller details from nature: the patterns made by the limbs of a dwarf beech, or the reflections of trees or light on the surface of water.
Moreover, the creatures who keep us company as well as those who keep us humble and watchful, are also favorite subjects for me.
My styles are realism or impressionistic--I am unashamedly representational. I hope you enjoy looking through this selection of my paintings. You may contact me to discuss a commission. bryan@artworksbybryamsmith.com
