Course Description

In this course you will learn to note on the canvas the basic “landmarks” of the face, to paint in the main “shadow-shapes” in order to establish values, and to paint the color variations in the three color-zones of the face.  We will also spend focused time on the crucial details of the eyes, nose, mouth, ears, and hair.

Session I: Basic terms, palette, brushes, two tools, media and solvents. Beginning the painting: the palette, toning, landmarks, shadow-shapes, assessing proportions, values, shadow shapes and making adjustments.

Session II: Three color zones of the face, oiling out your painting, mixing and applying flesh tones, assessing values and skin tones and making adjustments.

Session III: Attention to eyes, nose, ears, and lips, assessing proportions, values, color and making adjustments

Session IV: Reassessing shadow values and colors, attention to hair and background, and final touches.
